Cameroonian Languages Observatory
Missions
The Cameroonian Language Observatory website is an offshoot of the project dubbed “Design and creation of a multilingual digital observatory of the Grassfield and Basaa-beti languages (Cameroon)” implemented at the University of Dschang between 2017 and 2024, under the coordination of Professor Kouesso Jean Romain. It is essentially a collaborative platform for promoting Cameroonian languages and multilingualism. It has three specific missions :
- Collection, processing and sharing of information on the dynamics of Cameroonian languages;
- Support for researchers, politicians, educators, students, managers and linguistic entrepreneurs in carrying out their tasks related to Cameroonian languages;
- Carrying out development or research projects on Cameroonian languages.
History
In April 2005, on the eve of the 2nd World Summit on the Information Society in Tunis, the Electronic Rural Schools in African Languages (ERELA in French) project was born in Bamako. Initiated by Professor Tadadjeu Maurice, of late memory, the project was based on the 27 years of experience of the Operational Research Program on Cameroonian Languages (PROPELCA in French) and aimed to experiment with a generalizable model for the use of ICT in African languages in African rural schools. In its pilot phase, it is implemented in Cameroon by the National Association of Cameroonian Language Committees (ANACLAC in French) from 2006.
In 2012, Professor Kouesso Jean Romain set up the multidisciplinary research and development team ERELA at the University of Dschang. Its activities are focused primarily on three axes: the promotion of applied computer science courses in the Department of African Studies of the Faculty of Letters and Social Sciences, raising community awareness through conferences and strengthening the operational capacities of trainers and students through seminars and training courses. To do this, the team benefited from sustained support from Ms. Seuleu Lydie (Dipl.-Inf.) in terms of computer language development.
Responding to the 1st call for projects from the Institutional Research Support Fund (FIAR in French) of the University of Dschang in 2017, the ERELA research and development team developed and submitted its project Design and creation of a multilingual digital observatory of the Grassfield and Basaa-beti languages (Cameroon), whose acronym is OLC. This project will be among the first 7 beneficiaries of financial support from the FIAR.
Among the major achievements of the project is the Cameroonian Language Observatory website, a digital platform for monitoring and disseminating various information on Cameroonian languages.
